A Local Collaboration Driving Real Opportunities
In a time when the UK faces both a skills shortage in construction and green energy sectors and a rising number of NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) young people, initiatives that connect schools and employers are more crucial than ever.
This was demonstrated through a unique collaboration between The Cowplain School in Waterlooville and SERT, a Hampshire-based training and workforce solutions provider. Together, they delivered a six-month electrical skills programme aimed at giving Year 10 students real-world insight into vocational careers and preparing them for green jobs in Hampshire.
Supported by Morgan Sindall and Grainger PLC, who donated equipment and arranged a site visit, this project showcases how school and industry partnerships can inspire and prepare young people for the jobs of the future.
Practical Electrical Skills for Young People in Hampshire
Over the course of six months, students received weekly training from SERT’s experienced electrical trainer, Craig Rimmer, who visited The Cowplain School every Friday to deliver engaging, hands-on sessions.
Students learned:
-
Health and safety fundamentals
-
How to complete risk assessments
-
Basic hand and power tool use
-
Landing steel wire armoured (SWA) cable
-
Bending conduit
-
Installing cable containment systems
-
Electrical switching components
-
Safe isolation techniques
These essential skills introduced students to the practical demands of electrical work and offered a foundation to explore further education, apprenticeships, or direct employment in technical and construction careers.
A Pop-Up Workshop and Real-World Site Visit
To enhance the learning experience, a pop-up electrical workshop was constructed on-site at The Cowplain School, featuring electrical boards that allowed students to apply their new skills. This was made possible thanks to the generous equipment donations from Morgan Sindall and Grainger PLC.
Midway through the programme, students were invited to a live construction site at the Berewood development in Waterlooville. Organised by Grainger and Morgan Sindall, the visit included:
-
Talks from construction professionals and apprentices
-
Insights into careers in surveying and project management
-
A guided tour of a primary school under construction
-
A chance to ask questions and experience life on site
“The students were well informed and asked great questions. It was brilliant to see how passionate they were about joining the sector.”
– Lea Hampton, Grainger PLC

Celebrating Student Success
The programme concluded with an award ceremony on 9 May 2025, attended by parents, staff, and industry partners. Students demonstrated what they had learned using the pop-up boards and were individually awarded:
-
Framed certificates of completion
-
A personal portfolio of their work
-
A reference letter
-
A written personal statement to support future applications
“They’ve gone from knowing very little to producing electrical boards with real components. An amazing achievement.”
– Ian Gates, Headteacher, The Cowplain School

Real Career Impact for Local Students
Perhaps most importantly, the programme has already influenced future careers. Eight out of nine students involved are now planning to pursue careers in the construction and electrical sectors, having gained real insight and enthusiasm from their experience with SERT. One student has even chosen to explore a career in surveying, motivated by the site visit and industry discussions.
This is tangible evidence of how practical learning and employer engagement can transform career aspirations and support the pipeline of local talent entering the green economy.

A Meaningful Route into Green and Technical Careers
This programme not only taught valuable skills but also gave students the confidence and motivation to explore careers in construction, green energy, and electrical trades. It supported career planning and contributed to students’ personal development, wellbeing, and future employability.
“We didn’t just teach electrical skills—we helped students develop behaviours and mindsets suited for adult working environments.”
– Craig Rimmer, SERT
Feedback from students, staff, and parents has been overwhelmingly positive:
“It’s been perfect for my son. He loves being on his feet, using tools and learning something worthwhile. Every Friday has been a highlight for him.”
– Parent Testimonial
Why Hampshire Needs School and Employer Partnerships
With Hampshire’s economy placing increasing emphasis on low-carbon infrastructure, construction, and energy-efficient technologies, it is vital that schools and training providers offer practical pathways for young people to enter these fields.
“This kind of programme connects learning with purpose. It helps bridge the gap between school and the real world. It’s a solution that benefits young people and local employers alike.”
– Mark Edwards, CEO of SERT
