Solar PV Installation and Maintenance Course
LCL-Accredited Solar Photovoltaic Training in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight

Practical Solar PV Training Designed for Working Electricians
SERT delivers LCL-accredited Solar Photovoltaic training for qualified electricians across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight who want to install, commission, test and maintain small-scale solar PV systems in line with current UK regulations. This course is designed for electricians working in domestic and small commercial environments, where solar PV is increasingly specified as part of modern electrical installations.
Training combines thorough theoretical knowledge with practical exercises on fully operational solar PV systems, ensuring electricians understand how systems behave electrically once installed. Learning focuses on system performance, integration, and compliance, rather than installation processes in isolation. All training is delivered by tutors who have spent years working on the tools, bringing real site experience into every session.
Purpose-Built Solar PV Training Facilities
All solar PV training takes place at SERT’s Whiteley training centre, conveniently located for electricians travelling from across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The centre is equipped to replicate real installation scenarios, allowing learners to work directly with live solar PV arrays, inverters, DC cabling, AC distribution, isolation equipment and protective devices.
Learners gain hands-on experience inspecting system layouts, termination methods, earthing arrangements, and inverter interfaces. Practical exercises include installation setup, commissioning, system testing and fault identification, ensuring learning can be applied immediately when installing or maintaining solar PV systems on site.
Solar PV Installation and Maintenance Course Overview
This three-day course leads to the LCL Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Small-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems. It provides electricians with the knowledge required to safely and correctly install, commission, test and maintain solar PV systems in accordance with BS 7671, manufacturer instructions and industry standards.
Training follows the full lifecycle of a solar PV installation, from initial system design and array configuration through to commissioning, verification, performance checks, and routine maintenance. Strong emphasis is placed on safe isolation, correct testing procedures, fault diagnosis and ongoing system performance, supporting compliant and reliable installations across domestic and small commercial properties.
How Learning Is Delivered
Learning is structured to integrate theory with practical application throughout the course. Classroom sessions cover solar PV design principles, DC and AC circuit behaviour, inverter selection, protection methods, earthing and bonding requirements and regulatory compliance.
This knowledge is reinforced through hands-on work using live systems and wall-mounted demonstration boards, allowing learners to commission systems, carry out testing, interpret results and diagnose common installation and operational faults. This approach ensures a clear connection between electrical theory and real site-based decision-making.
Who the Course Is For
This course is intended for qualified electricians and experienced electrical operatives who meet the entry requirements and want to expand into solar PV installation and maintenance. It is suitable for electricians working in domestic and small commercial environments who require a recognised qualification aligned with current electrical regulations and industry expectations.
