Combined Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) Training
Complete Installation, Commissioning and Design Certification – Hampshire & Isle of Wight
SERT’s Combined Air Source Heat Pump Course provides structured training for gas engineers and HVAC professionals seeking in-depth knowledge of air source heat pump systems. Designed specifically for working engineers across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, this programme covers system design, installation, commissioning, servicing and fault diagnosis in line with current industry standards. The course follows a blended learning approach, combining classroom instruction with hands-on workshops to develop applied understanding alongside theoretical knowledge.
Who Is the Course For
This programme is suitable for experienced heating engineers, gas engineers and HVAC specialists looking to expand their service offering into low-carbon heating solutions. It is particularly relevant for professionals with existing site experience who wish to gain recognised qualifications while improving their understanding of system hydraulics, controls integration and component operation.
The course is ideal for engineers aged 40–50 working in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight who want a practical, structured route to enhancing their technical knowledge in renewable heating systems.
Course Details
Delivered over four consecutive days at SERT’s training centre in Whiteley, Hampshire (PO15 7AL), the course awards two recognised qualifications:
- Installation, Commissioning and Servicing of Air Source Heat Pumps (OFT21-504A)
- Design of Heat Pump Systems (OFT21-504D)
Course Structure
Training is delivered in small groups, combining classroom-based learning with practical workshops to replicate real-world installation scenarios. Experienced trainers with extensive on-site backgrounds guide learners through system design, installation techniques, commissioning, servicing, and fault diagnosis.
Course content includes:
- Residential and small commercial heat pump system design and specification
- Installation methods aligned with current regulations and best practice
- Commissioning procedures, servicing requirements and troubleshooting common faults
- Health and safety considerations specific to air source heat pump systems
Practical exercises support classroom theory, giving engineers the confidence to apply their knowledge directly on-site.
Facilities
SERT’s Whiteley training centre offers a comprehensive range of live air source heat pump systems and dedicated assessment rigs, allowing gas and HVAC engineers to develop diagnostic and fault-finding skills in a controlled environment.
Units include Midea, Panasonic and Samsung monobloc heat pumps (heating and DHW) and Curv DHW-only systems, all accessible for inspection, including removal of covers to explore component operation.
Installed unvented domestic hot water systems and heating systems demonstrate typical on-site configurations, enabling discussion of system options such as plate heat exchangers, low-loss headers and glycol/antifreeze valves. A stripped-down heat pump is available to show individual components and the refrigeration cycle, providing hands-on understanding and supporting engineers interested in F-Gas training.
These facilities reinforce applied learning, combining theoretical knowledge with real-world system inspection and troubleshooting experience.

SERT’s Training
SERT provides a professional learning environment for Hampshire and Isle of Wight heating engineers and HVAC professionals, with small class sizes, structured delivery and tutors who have extensive field experience. Completion equips learners with the knowledge and practical understanding required to install, commission and service air source heat pumps safely and efficiently.
While the course does not provide MCS certification, it forms a strong foundation for engineers intending to progress towards MCS accreditation, supporting competency assessment and registration with an MCS-approved certification body.
