All EV charger training is delivered at SERT’s Whiteley training centre, a central location for electricians travelling from Southampton, Portsmouth, Fareham, Winchester, Gosport and the Isle of Wight.

Learners work with fully operational EV charge points mounted on wall-mounted electrical demonstration boards, mirroring real installation conditions. Training covers charger positioning, cable routing, isolation points, and integration with existing electrical installations and consumer units. Earthing and protection arrangements are demonstrated using equipment commonly installed across domestic and workplace EV charging projects in the region.

This practical setup allows electricians to gain confidence in installing home EV chargers and commercial charging equipment, supported by a clear understanding of regulatory requirements.

 

EV Charging Course Overview

Learning combines structured theory with practical exercises on live EV charging equipment. Classroom sessions focus on system design considerations, load management, and compliance with BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation.

Practical sessions reinforce this knowledge through hands-on installation and commissioning tasks. Electricians carry out safe isolation, inspection, testing, and certification procedures, ensuring installations meet current UK standards. Successful completion confirms competence to install and commission EV charge points across a range of settings.

 

Course Structure and Learning Content

The course covers EV charging system principles, including the selection of suitable equipment, installation methods, and protective measures. Learners explore earthing systems such as TN-S, TN-C-S and TT, alongside PME considerations and control measures required for compliant EV charger installations.

Practical exercises allow electricians to apply this knowledge directly, commissioning EV chargers, completing electrical testing, and producing correct certification. This ensures a strong link between regulatory requirements and everyday installation decisions.

 

Who the Course Is Designed For

This course is intended for qualified and practising electricians working across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight who want to offer EV charger installation as part of their electrical services.

It is suitable for electricians holding a Level 3 electrical qualification or Domestic Electrician Installer (DEI) certification, whether currently valid or expired within the last six months. Entry Requirements

To enrol, learners must hold a recognised Level 3 electrical qualification or Domestic Electrician Installer (DEI) certification. On application, SERT will carry out an initial assessment to confirm suitability for the qualification in line with LCL Awards requirements.
