Solar PV and Battery Storage Installer Course

Solar PV and Battery Storage Installer Course

Combined Level 3 Renewable Energy Training for Electricians in Hampshire

Solar PV and Battery Storage Training for Qualified Electricians

SERT delivers a combined Solar PV and Battery Storage Installer course for qualified electricians working across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight who want to design, install, commission and maintain solar photovoltaic systems and electrical energy storage systems as part of modern electrical installations.

This five-day course brings together two LCL Level 3 qualifications, supporting electricians already working in domestic and small commercial environments who are expanding into renewable energy installation, battery storage systems and low-carbon electrical work. With solar PV and home battery storage now commonly specified on new builds and retrofit projects across the South Coast, this training reflects how systems are installed and commissioned on-site.

Renewable Energy Training Facilities in Hampshire

All training takes place at SERT’s Whiteley training centre, a central location for electricians travelling from Southampton, Portsmouth, Fareham, Winchester, Gosport and the Isle of Wight.

Learners work directly with live solar PV systems and electrical energy storage equipment, including inverters, DC and AC cabling, protection devices, isolation equipment, and battery units widely used in UK domestic installations. Systems are mounted on wall-mounted electrical demonstration boards, allowing electricians to clearly see cable routing, inverter positioning, earthing arrangements and how solar PV and battery storage integrate with consumer units and grid supplies.

This practical setup supports a clear understanding of how renewable energy systems operate electrically, rather than learning installation steps in isolation.

Solar PV and Battery Storage Course Overview

This combined programme leads to the following LCL Awards qualifications:

  • Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Small-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems
  • Level 3 Award in the Design, Installation and Commissioning of Electrical Energy Storage Systems

Delivered over five days, the course provides electricians with the knowledge required to design, install, commission, test, and hand over solar PV and battery storage systems safely and in line with UK regulations.

Training covers the full system lifecycle, from site assessment and system selection through to commissioning, verification, fault identification, and client handover. Strong emphasis is placed on compliance with BS 7671, manufacturer guidance, and the IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems, ensuring installations meet current industry expectations.

Course Structure and Learning Content

Learning combines theory with structured practical exercises on fully operational systems. Classroom sessions focus on solar PV design principles, array configuration, inverter selection, DC and AC circuit behaviour, battery technologies, system sizing, protection methods, isolation requirements and regulatory compliance.

Practical sessions reinforce this knowledge through hands-on work with live installations. Electricians commission systems, carry out testing, interpret results, and diagnose common installation and operational faults. This approach ensures decisions made on site are informed by a solid understanding of system behaviour.

Who the Course Is Designed For

This course is designed for qualified and practising electricians working across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight who want to add solar PV installation and battery storage systems to their existing electrical services.

It is particularly suited to electricians carrying out domestic and small commercial work who are responding to increasing demand for renewable energy installations, home battery storage, and low-carbon electrical solutions.

Entry Requirements

On application, SERT, as the Approved Centre, will carry out an initial assessment to confirm the learner’s capability to complete the qualification.

Prior to registration, learners must provide evidence that they hold:

Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS 7671, current edition)

And one of the following:

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment)
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Installation or Maintenance)
  • Level 3 Electrotechnical Apprenticeship Qualification
  • Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker
  • Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification
  • Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings Experienced Worker Qualification
  • Building Services Engineering (Level 3) Electrotechnical Installation Qualification
  • SVQ in Electrical Installation at SCQF Level 7
  • Equivalent qualifications listed in the EAS Qualifications Guide
  • Current ECS Gold Card issued by the JIB or SJIB for Installation Electrician, Approved Electrician, Maintenance Electrician, or Domestic Electrician

All evidence is reviewed in line with LCL Level 3 qualification requirements.
