Is Heat Pump Growth Fast Enough? The UK’s Push for Sustainable Heating Solutions

12.11.2024

The heat pump market in the UK has experienced remarkable growth, with 2024 set to be a record-breaking year. As of September, over 42,000 certified heat pump installations have been completed, already surpassing the 40,426 installations recorded for the whole of 2023. This acceleration is largely driven by heightened public awareness, attractive incentives, and robust government support aimed at reducing the UK's carbon footprint.

However, the sector's rapid expansion has not been without its challenges. Earlier this year, concerns emerged regarding the potential depletion of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme’s funding. Recognising the critical need for sustained support, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero intervened, empowering Ofgem to increase grant funding from £150 million to £200 million. This increase ensures that more UK households can access financial assistance to transition to renewable heating solutions.

Despite the surge in installations, the heat pump market remains relatively small in comparison to traditional boiler systems. With the UK’s total number of boilers expected to approach 1.5 million this year, the number of heat pump installations still represents a small fraction of the overall market. Even with continued momentum, estimates suggest that the UK may see fewer than 70,000 new heat pump installations by the end of 2024.

A clear shift in technology preference towards air-source heat pumps is becoming evident, though this focus leaves room for other systems, such as exhaust air heat pumps. These alternative solutions are particularly suited to urban environments where ventilation and space limitations demand more flexible options.

As a leader in training for the renewable energy sector, SERT is committed to equipping the workforce with the necessary skills to meet this growing demand. Education and awareness are key to bridging the gap between the adoption of heat pumps and traditional heating methods. By supporting businesses, installers, and technicians, we can work together to drive the UK towards a sustainable heating future.

For those looking to transition into the renewable energy sector or enhance their qualifications, SERT offers bespoke training programmes designed to keep you at the forefront of this energy revolution. Let’s collaborate to accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions and ensure that heat pump growth aligns with the UK's ambitious sustainability goals.
