Boris Johnson Brings Forward EV Rollout

23.11.2021

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has announced the new legal requirement of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points to be installed in new build homes from 2022!

This means that all new developments, both homes and non-residential buildings, will need a qualified EV installer go round and fit a charging point.  Any buildings that plan for ‘major renovations’ after 2021 will also be included in the mandatory installations, meaning a minimum total of 145,000 charging points will need to be installed in the UK.

SERT are poised and ready to upskill existing qualifications to meet the talent pool demand and do our part in supporting the government rollouts.  Achieved via our unique blend of recruitment and training, we can offer providers with bespoke workforce solutions and organise skilled workers to meet the targets.

We have expanded our training offerings to support new entrants into the market. Now offering electric, gas and smart metering diplomas, with apprenticeships set to launch in 2022.  These are the core qualifications required for renewable technologies and for candidates to begin their careers in the utilities industry.

EV charging points are used to charge the batteries in fully electric and hybrid vehicles. This new initiative supports plans to end the sale of traditional combustion engines in vehicles by 2030. Part of the UK’s strategy to reduce emissions and act as the world leader on green issues.

SERT offer electric vehicle charging courses to either upskill existing electricians (2-days) or upskill candidates with some experience e.g. smart meter installers.  The smart meter installer route would take around 60-days, which includes managed learning hours and portfolio building under qualified supervision.  SERT believe in training to ensure the candidates have the competence as well as the qualifications to work, which means we will not cut corners by offering quick-fix courses to upskill candidates.

The RAC mentions ‘the average cost for installing a dedicated charger at home is around £800 – but financial support is available from the government’. Unfortunately, we cannot do anything about the price, but we can ensure your local installers hold the correct skills and qualifications.

We must adapt our economy and its infrastructure for the green industrial revolution.  Small individual changes, such as installing a smart meter, battery storage, solar panels or EV charging point in your homes, will contribute to make a bigger difference nationwide and globally.

If you are a provider seeking the resource to meet this new demand, or an individual interested in getting involved in a promising and rewarding career installing renewable technologies, then SERT can offer you a way forward.
