The Power of Upskilling: Estimating Social Value in Hampshire

13.03.2025
At SERT, we believe in the transformative power of skills and training. Recently, we estimated the social impact of our training courses using UK Government guidelines, and the results are eye-opening. While these estimates provide valuable insight, they don’t capture the full extent of our work, such as:
The lives changed through our recruitment placements.

  • The wider benefits of our team’s volunteering efforts.
  • Our myth-busting sessions that help Hampshire residents navigate green skills.
  • The Pop-Up Green School, bringing sustainability education to secondary schools over the past year.
  • Even with a conservative approach, our analysis highlights just how impactful upskilling can be for individuals, businesses, and the wider community.

Estimating the Social Value of Training

With 1,064 learners completing 1,751 courses, we estimate that the social value generated ranges between £1.9 million and £3.6 million. Here’s a closer look at the numbers:

Breaking It Down

  • Increased Earnings: Professional training courses boost annual earnings by an average of £1,500-£3,000 per person, adding £1.6 million to £3.2 million in additional income to the local economy.
  • Economic Growth: Research from Social Value UK suggests that every £1 invested in skills generates £6-£10 in long-term economic benefits.
  • Business Productivity: A highly skilled workforce lowers recruitment costs, improves employee retention, and enhances productivity, valued at £294K to £441K in direct business benefits.

Why Upskilling Matters

  • For job seekers, learning new skills increases employability and job security.
  • For businesses, it means hiring qualified employees who boost efficiency.
  • For communities, it strengthens economic resilience and social mobility.

These figures reinforce what we witness daily: individuals advancing their careers through skill development, companies securing the right talent, and industries adapting to future workforce demands.

Invest in Your Future with Upskilling

While statistics help measure success, the real impact is seen in the personal success stories of individuals who have unlocked new career opportunities and businesses that thrive with a skilled workforce.
